Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is a thoroughly ridiculous movie made infinitely more enjoyable by how much it recognizes that.

What a pretty fucking movie. I mean that genuinely, too. I feel like every time we opened on a new scene, I'd be mildly awestruck by the setting or the decor or the incredible costume porn or the really, really nice cars. I don't even like cars all that much! They were just that nice.

It also, of course, features a lot of pretty fucking people, but I appreciate that there was (mostly) no romance, and that they weren't quite character stereotypes. They were close, admittedly, but no one was specifically tied in to very narrow roles, and the actors brought a surprising amount to each character. Unfortunately, no one could save any of those sentimental background scenes, because they really just don't fit the tone of the movie, especially when half that emotional output was for naught in the end.

I don't really have anything useful to say on it, but I just want to point out: Tom Cruise scaled the Burj Khalifa. Himself. I don't care if he was wearing a harness, dude is turning fifty next year, and he went, "Yeah, you know, why not, I'll do the dangerous stunt work on the tallest building in the world." Props, you crazy motherfucker.

Look, it might not deserve the 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, but this was such a fun movie, and I really like that even though it's a typical summer blockbuster, they chose to release it now. I didn't engage my brain, sure, but it's very impressive cinematographically, and it's not at all a bad script. There are worse ways to spend your afternoon. And odds are some of those will get nominated for Oscars.

(Mostly irrelevant, but the previews were also amazing. A GI Joe movie with almost none of the cast from the first one? Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance? I know what's on my to-watch list!)
